Background
Treatment outcomes for dermatologic conditions are directly affected by patient compliance. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of patient satisfaction, a key component in compliance, with a water-lipid-based aerosol foam containing urea 40% in patients with xerosis who had previously failed on other topical keratolytic products.

Methods
This open-label study enrolled 15 patients with mild to moderately severe xerosis who had failed on topical keratolytic therapy. Patients were instructed to apply the water-lipid-based foam twice daily. They were interviewed and photographed at baseline (visit 1) and two weeks later at visit 2. At visit 2, patients were asked about their overall satisfaction with the product. Improvement of the symptoms of xerosis was also evaluated. The majority of patients (73%; n=11) liked the foam or found it to be acceptable. A majority of patients (80%; n=12) also saw an improvement in symptoms between visits 1 and 2. It is interesting to note that 2 of the 4 patients who did not see an improvement in symptoms had used it on hair-bearing skin, which might be an impediment to using the product properly on this area of the body

Conclusion
The water-lipid-based aerosol foam containing urea 40% is easy to use and offers a high degree of patient satisfaction in patients who have failed on other keratolytic foams or creams. This ease of use translates into higher patient compliance and improvement in symptoms in patients with mild to moderate xerosis.
