Attendees represented all corners of the United States plus 9 other
Countries. Pre-Conference Courses held Thursday offered 5 tracks with
topics ranging from offloading, to deep pressure ulcers, to a basic essentials
course to hyperbaric oxygen and more. The Exhibit Hall Opened during the
afternoon and included nearly 80 exhibitors providing related products and
services for much of the 4 day event. Thursday evening concluded with more
lectures and an Oral Abstract Session.
General Sessions were held Friday and Saturday with an array of topics to
interest anyone involved in wound care. The Keynote Address, “Wound Bed
Prep and Bacteria,” was delivered by Dr. Gary Sibbald which was followed by the
Annual Meeting of the Membership. A Breakfast Symposium was offered both
Friday and Saturday sponsored by Omega Medical Health Systems and Organogenesis
respectfully. Saturday was highlighted with a personal appearance by Patti
LaBelle who received the first APWCA Community Outreach Award. Dr. Sibbald
was the recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award. The Association
thanks Dr. Kathya Zinszer, Chair of our Outreach and Public Relations Committee,
for her assistance in establishing the contact with representatives from Patti
LaBelle and initiating her award appearance. Dr. Zinszer is the chair of the
Department of Orthopedics and Medicine at Temple University School of Podiatric
Medicine.
Saturday afternoon’s program was highlighted by the Annual Scientific Address
which again was organized and supported by McCord Research. Dr. Darlene McCord
generously brought PhD Research Scientists from the University of Iowa to our
clinically oriented audience. The Panel Presentation: Saving Peri-Wound
Cells: New Life for Dying Cells also featured Drs. Josh Madsen and Ehab Sarsour.
A four hour Symposium on global aspects of Critical Limb Ischemia was a
collaborative academic event presented by the APWCA and The American College
Hyperbaric College of Medicine (ACHM). Sunday morning drew a large number
of participants, with over 200 attendees listening to oral abstracts followed by
a 3 hour session on “The Business of Wound Care”. Light breakfast for all
four days, lunch and breaks for 3 days, a poster cocktail reception and more
were included with registration. The Friday evening reception provided an
opportunity to recognize the Buruli Ulcer Foundation, McCord Research, Inc. and
the American Wound Care Foundation.
